MSc Programmes Information Seminar
The Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society hosted an information seminar on Tuesday 12th November 2019 on the MSc in Molecular Cell Biology with Bioinnovation, the MRes programme and MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
Dr Kellie Dean is the Director of the MSc Molecular Cell Biology with Bioinnovation and the MRes programme. Dr Marcus Claesson is the Director of the MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Both Directors provided students with significant information on the entry requirements, curriculum, first destinations, cost and the application process.
A student’s perspective of the programmes was presented by Naomi Hanrahan, a 2019 alumni of the MSc in Molecular Cell Biology with Bioinnovation programme; and Rachel Fitzgerald, a 2015 graduate of the MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Naomi discussed in particular the module ML6001 Molecular Cell Biology Research Dissertation (40 credits), which she conducted under the supervision of Dr Silvia Melgar Villeda, APC Microbiome Institute, UCC. Naomi will commence a PhD with Dr Melgar Villeda in January 2020.
Rachel Fitzgerald is a Genetics graduate who commenced the MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology without any previous coding experience and she answered many questions from students in a similar position, who were interested in completing the masters. Rachel provided the students with information on the placement project she conducted at Janssen for the module MB6303 Dissertation in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (30 credits), which involved developing an application to assist in predicting the shelf life of drug products. Rachel is currently a PhD student in the School of Microbiology.
The Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society would like to thank Dr Dean, Dr Claesson, Naomi and Rachel for providing such excellent information, which will have helped students when deciding what which course to choose next.
