Conferrings: PhD in Biochemistry 2015

On 18 June 2015 at a joint SEFS/Medicine and Health conferring, four students graduated from this School with PhD degrees; Drs Alina Kondrashina and Alicia Waters (Professor Papkovsky’s lab), Dr Joanna Stannika (Professor Cotter’s lab) and Dr Siti Nurtahirah (Tahirah) Jaafar (Professor Sheehan’s lab).

Dr Siti Nurtahirah (Tahirah) Jaafar  came to UCC from the School of Marine Science, Terengannu University, Malaysia. She is now working as an academic in her home University.

Dr Joanna Stannika came to Ireland from Poland and completed both her BSc and PhD at UCC (with Professsor Tom Cotter). Her family including her mother and grandmother were able to travel to Ireland for her conferring. Joanna was a recipient of the Professor Art Champlin Gold Medal Award in 2011. The Professor Art Champlin medal is awarded annually to the top student graduating BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry. She is presently working as a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Rosemary O’Connor’s group.

Dr Alina Kondrashina is a graduate of Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia and is pictured at her PhD conferring with her supervisor, Professor Dmitri Papkovsky. Alina is presently on maternity leave in Cork, looking after her beautiful daughter Anna.

Dr Alicia Waters is pictured at her conferring with her supervisor, Professor Dmitri Papkovsky of this School. She is presently Associate Research Fellow at University of Exeter, UK.
