Transiton year participant and Overall winner of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in 2018, Simon Meehan of Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co Cork, describes his experience in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Throughout the week spent in Biochemistry, under the supervision of the technicians, a great deal was learned. Personally, the experience gained from this week was invaluable. The course not only taught its participants scientific method and how to accurately conduct an experiment, but also showed the communication, team work and social skills involved. This revealed that science is not just about experimentation and development of method to reach new understanding, but is very much focused around social aspects and the friendly interaction with like-minded people in which one can further their knowledge. It was a pleasure to be involved in such an enlightening experience given by Dr Kerins and the technicians and I hope that others in the future will enjoy it as much as I have.
