2019 Eli Lilly Awards for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry and Biotechnology
The 2019 Eli Lilly Awards ceremony for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry and Biotechnology was held on Tue 4th February 2020.
Dr Deirdre Buckley, Team Leader, Downstream Operations IE43 at Eli Lilly presented the students who achieved the highest grades in the MSc Biotechnology programme and in the undergraduate Biochemistry programme with their award.
The recipients of the awards were:
- Caoimhe Broderick – The Eli Lilly Postgraduate Award for Academic Excellence in Biotechnology
- Niamh Casey – Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry 3rd year
- Stephen O'Shea – Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry 2nd year
Caoimhe attained first class honours in the MSc Biotechnology programme obtaining the highest aggregate grade in the MSc Biotechnology class. In 2019 Caoimhe graduated with a first-class honours BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds degree. As part of this degree Caoimhe completed a research project under the supervision of Dr Sinéad Kerins and attained a 1H in this component of the programme. Caoimhe completed her placement for the MSc Biotechnology programme in BioMarin and her dissertation was entitled The Use of Change Control and Quality Risk Management Tools in the Implementation of a New Standard Operating Procedure within Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing. Caoimhe is currently employed at BioMarin as an Upstream Manufacturing Biotechnician.
Niamh received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in third year Biochemistry and in 2019, received the equivalent for academic excellence in second year Biochemistry. Niamh attained the title of College Scholar each year in recognition of her exceptional examination results. Niamh was the recipient of a School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Summer Research bursary and completed a research project optimising the purification of recombinant IL-8, under the supervision of Dr Eoin Fleming. Niamh is also recipient of the Professor Arthur K. Champlin Gold Medal Award (add link to path to gold medal)
Stephen received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in second year Biochemistry. Stephen was also awarded the title of College Scholar in 2019 and 2020. Stephen achieves at the highest level and was the winner of the Regional South Cork Student Enterprise Competition, 2015 and represented Cork in the National Student Enterprise All-Ireland final in Croke Park, 2016.
Dr Sinéad Kerins thanked Eli Lilly for their continued support and for sponsoring these awards which allow us to formally recognise the academic achievements of our students and extended her thanks to Deirdre Buckley and Elaine O’ Brien for their excellent presentations outlining their roles in Eli Lilly. Dr Kerins also thanked Professor Tommie McCarthy, Director of the Master’s Programme in Biotechnology for compering the awards ceremony.
