2018 Summer Placement Seminar
On Thursday, 18th of October, Dr Sinéad Kerins hosted an event for third year Biochemistry, Biomedical Science and Genetics students where 4th year Biochemistry students delivered presentations about placements they had obtained during the summer between 3rd and 4th year. These ranged from industry placements to research internships within UCC.
Each student gave a comprehensive and educated presentation of the tasks and duties they undertook during their time there, as well as how they went about obtaining the placement.
An informative presentation was also given by Dr Kerins about the application process for the SEFS bursaries for students partaking in research in UCC.
I found two students’ presentations in particular to be interesting, Maeve O Sullivan, who undertook a management type role in Janssen, and Caoimhe Lynch, who worked on a research team with Professor Cora O Neill in UCC. Both of these presentations detailed different parts of both industry and research laboratory work, and each speaker’s unique perspective of their placement proved helpful and compelling based on the feedback and questions of the students in attendance.

Dr Sinéad Kerins would like to thank the Biochemistry 4th year students: Aoife Cronin, John Downey, Caoimhe Lynch, Abbey Murphy, Nicola O’Riordan, Maeve O’Sullivan, Rachel Quinlan and Katie Wall for delivering engaging presentations and providing the 3rd year students will excellent information and advice on a wide range of opportunities. Aoife, Katie and Caoimhe were recipients of SEFS bursaries and conducted their research projects under the supervision of Dr Ken Nally, Dr Susan Joyce and Professor Cora O’Neill respectively. Rachel was a recipient of an APC bursary and worked with Dr Aine Fanning. John worked in the School of Chemistry under the supervision of Dr Simon Lawrence and Abbey worked in REMEDI, NUIG Galway. Nicola and Maeve completed Pharmaceutical placements with Nicola working at GSK, UK and Maeve working at Janssen Biologics, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.
