2018 Eli Lilly Awards for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry and Biotechnology

2018 Eli Lilly undergraduate and postgraduate award winners: Niamh Casey, Caoimhe Lynch and Patrick Markey.

The annual Eli Lilly undergraduate and postgraduate awards for academic excellence were held on Tuesday 26th February. The students who achieved the highest grades in the MSc Biotechnology programme and in the undergraduate Biochemistry programme were presented with their award by Dr Deirdre Buckley, TSMS Team Leader at Eli Lilly.

Patrick Markey was presented with the Eli Lilly MSc Biotechnology Postgraduate Scholarship. Patrick completed his undergraduate degree at UCD and graduated with a first class honours degree in Neuroscience. Patrick attended Salesian College Secondary School Celbridge, Co. Kildare and attained the Senior Student of the Year award. Patrick completed his MSc placement at Janssen Sciences Ireland and is now an employee of this company.

Caoimhe Lynch received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in third year Biochemistry. In 2018, Caoimhe received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in second year Biochemistry. Caoimhe has attained the title of College Scholar in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in recognition of her examination results in her first, second and third year, respectively. Caoimhe was the recipient of a SEFS Summer Research Bursary and during the Summer of 2018 completed a research project under the supervision of Professor Cora O’Neill.

Niamh Casey received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in second year Biochemistry. Niamh attended St Angela’s Secondary School, Ursuline Convent, Waterford and commenced Biological and Chemical Sciences in 2016. Niamh was awarded the title of College Scholar in acknowledgement of her academic achievements in her first and second year examinations. Niamh was awarded an undergraduate SEFS Summer Research Bursary to complete a research project under the supervision of Dr Eoin Fleming.

Professor Tommie McCarthy, Director of the Masters Programme in Biotechnology opened the awards ceremony and introduced the recipients of the awards and highlighted their achievements. Following the awards presentation Ciarán McCarthy a BSc in Biochemistry and MSc in Biotechnology UCC graduate and Dr Deirdre Buckley BSc and PhD Biochemistry UCC graduate, gave presentations on their roles in Eli Lilly.
