UCC celebrates Fascination of Plants Day

7 May 2024

University College Cork will celebrate Fascination of Plants Day (FoPD) on Friday 17th May with an exhibition and guided tours at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Where: School of BEES, Butler Building, North Mall Campus, North Mall, Cork, T23 TK30.

When: Friday May 17th from 1pm - 3.30pm

The seventh FoPD takes place this year and is organised under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.
As part of FoPD, the public are invited to visit the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES; Eircode: T23 TK30) at UCC and find out why plants are so fascinating. The event takes place from 1pm to 3.30 on Friday, May 17th. No pre-booking is required.
Guided glasshouse tours will take place at 1.15pm and 3pm, will last approximately 30 minutes, and will depart from the Butler Building (T23 TK30).
Visitors can find out about:
Trees – The Atlantic rainforest and Irish Tree Explorers Network
Sustainable food production and agricultural weeds
Plant biotechnology
The age of chocolate
Plant climate responses
and much more…
