Science Week - John Cryan explains how Gut bacteria could actually reduce stress
In an article for Science Week in 'The Journal.ie', Professor Cryan describes how the presence of certain microbes in the gut can actually reduce stress in healthy human subjects.
John Cryan has been studying the effect of microbes in the gut and their influence on the brain and believes that in time it may be possible to target brain disorders such as depression or Alzheimer’s via the gut by administering the right sorts of bacteria to it. So, is a cure for stress on the cards? Dr Cryan thinks so. In fact, he thinks that in 5-7 years ‘we may have a product on the market that has been scientifically tested rigorously to show that it has positive effects on mental health’.
