Engineering Education for Sustainable Development

Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD)

The staff Process & Chemical Engineering are research active in the area of Sustainability and Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD). This has resulted in research informed teaching in this area, and as a result the undergraduate degree is particularly well served in this area.

The theme of the 3rd  International Symposium for Engineering Education (ISEE2010), held at UCC and organised by the department in 2010 was ‘Educating Engineers for a Changing World - Leading transformation from an unsustainable global society’. This incorporated a delegate workshop which was informed by a specially published review paper co-authored by two department staff with two Australian academics entitled: ‘Engineering Education for Sustainable Development: A Review of International Progress’. An outcomes paper from the workshop was later published in the International Journal for Sustainability in Higher Education, along with other research papers in this field by academic staff.

University College Cork hosts the 10th Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD2021) conference, from 14-16 June 2021. The theme of the conference, the first time it has come to Ireland, is 'Building Flourishing Communities'. See .

ISEE2010 Conference

The Department of Process & Chemical Engineering was proud to host the 3rd International Symposium for Enginering Education (ISEE 2010) at University College Cork on 1st and 2nd July 2010.

The theme of the Symposium was:

Leading transformation from an unsustainable global society

This significant international conference explored a number of key issues pertaining to engineering education in the twenty first century. These include sustainability in engineering education, IT applications, pedagogical approaches & assessment for learning outcomes, Bologna and industry perspectives.

We really enjoyed welcoming so many Engineering educators, researchers and professionals  to Cork for a stimulating, thought provoking and transformative two days in 2010, to join the engineering educational community in charting a way forward for the education of engineers to face the substantial challenges of the twenty first century.

Follow this link to the ISEE 2010 Symposium website for further details. Please also note that ISEE2012 will be taking place at the University of Sheffield on 19th and 20th July 2012.
