On Thursday June 29th 2023, the 5th Annual Clinical Audit & Quality Improvement Day was held in the Mercy University Hospital.

The event is approved for external CPD by the RCPI and had over 300 in person attendees over the day. The event was held in hybrid fashion with the posters shown on a reel throughout the day online (as well as hanging posters at the venue). This year, there were 63 new projects presented in poster & five previous category winners with platform presentations.

William Jones, UCC medical student, presented his undergraduate project "An Analysis of suspected urinary tract infections in older adults: Time to Stop the Dip" completed with Dr Kieran O Connor. It is a real life clinical project & it highlights the challenges of clinical diagnosis of UTI. William’s data can help shine a greater light on the overuse of urinalysis & poor adherence of clinical guidelines in UTI diagnosis & treatment in older people. It was a challenging project in terms of data collection when looking at many variables in a retrospective study.

A panel of judges including senior clinicians and senior management in Mercy University Hospital  and SSWHG deemed his project one of the winning projects. His project won in the category of “Improving Use of Resources”.

Congratulations to William!
