EXAMINATIONS

Information and Communication:

Examination Entry:

• Registration at the beginning of the academic year also constitutes examination entry for the Semester 1 (December), Spring or Semester 2 (Summer) Written Examinations. For candidates whose first examination is in Autumn, registration constitutes examination entry.

Examination Timetables:

• Your timetable for formal written examinations will be available at: https://mystudentadmin.ucc.ie/  
• All students will be contacted once this timetable is available
• Dates for the main written examination periods are available at https://www.ucc.ie/en/exams/timetables-venues/
• Candidates for examination are required to print their final individualised examination timetable from https://mystudentadmin.ucc.ie/. The timetable will detail the module(s) being examined the date, time, duration, venue and assigned seat number
• A clean copy of your examination timetable (in addition to your student ID card) is required for entry to each examination.

Examination results:

• Dates for release of provisional examination results are available at: https://www.ucc.ie/en/exams/results/
• Examination results will available from https://mystudentadmin.ucc.ie/ following approval at institutional Examination Board.

Supplemental Examinations:

• Students who fail to achieve the pass standard for the year, or who are absent from a formal written examination, must repeat all failed/absent modules at a Supplemental Examination, where there is provision to do so and if not disallowed by the Examination Board, or in a Repeat Year
• Students who are eligible are automatically entered for Supplemental Examination in the relevant subject(s)/module(s).
• Students who do not intend to sit a Supplemental Examination must immediately inform the Student Records and Examinations Office (SREO) at sreo@ucc.ie
• There is an examination entry fee for Supplemental Examinations
• All requirements governing the Supplemental Examination for individual modules are detailed at:  https://www.ucc.ie/admin/registrar/modules/  NOTE: Some modules have no provision for a Supplemental Examination and students must repeat the year 
• Marks achieved at Supplemental Examination are capped at the pass level for that module (normally 40% or 50%).  This mark will be used in determining the aggregation of marks, progression and the calculation of honours (where applicable).  The actual mark achieved by the candidate will be recorded on the student’s record/academic transcript.

Repeat Year:

• Repeat year students must re-attend for the appropriate modules before again presenting for the relevant examination. Specific provision for examinations in a repeat year of a programme are available at: https://www.ucc.ie/admin/registrar/marksandstandards/  

Marks and Standards

Pass by Compensation
In specified programmes, students who fail one or more modules, but whose marks are above a specified minimum level, may pass those modules by compensation and thus progress to the next year of the programme.  For programme-specific details, see: https://www.ucc.ie/admin/registrar/marksandstandards/

Exemption (EX)
Candidates who pass one or more modules, but fail overall, are exempted from retaking examination in those modules they have passed. Such exemptions carry time limits. All failed/absent modules must be taken at a Supplemental Examination.

It is the responsibility of each student to acquaint themselves with examination procedures and regulations, their timetable for, and locations of, examinations. Absence from an Examination

• Where a student fails to present for formal examination, a judgement of "Absent" is recorded for that module
• Where a module is examined by a combination of Continuous Assessment and Formal Written Examination, any mark achieved from the Continuous Assessment element(s) is recorded, with a judgement for the module of "Absent" 
• Where a module is assessed wholly by Continuous Assessment, and no work is presented, a "Presented No Work" judgement is recorded.

Mitigation (Waiver of Capping or Deferral)
A student who, under defined criteria, is prevented from attending all or part of an examination, and who has not withdrawn from the programme, may submit an application to Waive Capping at Supplemental Examination or to Defer examinations through the relevant Mitigation processes (see: https://www.ucc.ie/en/exams/procedures-regulations/).

Recheck/Appeal of Examination Results

• Undergraduate degree students, except for those in the College of Medicine and Health, who complete their programmes in either Summer or Autumn will be conferred in October of each year
• College of Medicine and Health undergraduate students who complete their programme in Summer will be conferred in May/June; those who complete their programme in Winter will be conferred in February of each year
• Eligible postgraduate students will be conferred in February, June or October of each year
