NorseMap visits Woodstown

15 Jun 2026
The project team was privileged to visit the new excavation of the Viking settlement at Woodstown near Waterford at the invite of Neil Jackman, archaeologist with the Clonmel-based  of Abarta Heritage. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the site and gain insight into the discoveries emerging from this important excavation.

Located along the River Suir, Woodstown is a site of major archaeological significance, first identified in 2003 and preserved due to its importance. The current targeted excavation, involving Irish and Norwegian researchers, is already revealing fascinating artefacts, including a trading weight, a gaming piece, and metalwork dating back around 1,200 years.

It was particularly exciting for the team to see this work progressing on the ground and to hear about the ambitious plans for the site, which have the potential to greatly enhance engagement with Ireland’s Viking heritage and deliver lasting benefits for the region.

Further details on the excavation can be found in a recent RTÉ News article: https://www.rte.ie/news/munster/2026/0615/1578301-viking-settlement-waterford/
