DSIS Poster Presentation at the International Sustainability Transitions Conference in Zurich
DSIS researchers Professor Edmond Byrne and Dr Ian Hughes attended the International Sustainability Transitions Conference which was held in Zurich from August 31 to September 2, 2026. The conference theme ‘Hope – in challenging times’ explored in practical terms how researchers’ individual and collective work can cultivate environmental sustainability and social justice – even in times marked by armed conflicts, political polarization and mounting planetary crises.
The DSIS team presented a poster at the conference on the project’s unique framework for deep societal reimagining in the face of the polycrisis.
The DSIS framework originated in the socio-technical literature - which focuses primarily on technology as a driver for societal transition to address climate change. The DSIS project has since adopted a much wider perspective that involves the reimagining not only of technology but also of an array of social institutions including politics, economics, gender, religion and education as being essential to address the wider polycrisis. Participation in the IST2026 conference was hugely valuable in enabling the DSIS team to share the project’s perspective and to make connections with researchers internationally who are working on similar deep reimagining.
