Lecturer in Midwifery

Permanent Whole-Time Post

UCC wishes to appoint to the role of Lecturer (Above the Bar) in Midwifery. The appointee will be expected to contribute to teaching, assessment and programme development and administration at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as engage in relevant research. The successful appointee will hold a professional midwifery qualification, have held or hold a registration (or be eligible to register) in Midwifery, with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Applicants will be expected to have an academic qualification to Masters level and be registered for or have completed a PhD/Doctorate. Applicants are also expected to have considerable midwifery experience.
 
The School of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1994 and since then a wide range of programmes have been developed at both undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels. In addition, the School has a growing suite of Continuing Professional Development modules supporting life-long learning. Since 2012, the School has actively engaged in international recruitment and now has a growing body of international students. The School now has over 1,300 students and is one of the largest in the University. The School is committed to excellence and leadership in teaching, practice and research involving close collaborative relationships with health service providers, and national and international educators and researchers. The School holds the Athena Swan Bronze Award and is in the top 30 in QS subject Rankings for Nursing.

Duties of the post

In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research led institution, the duties of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the university, the discipline and the community. The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties, and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

The roles and responsibilities outlined below are to be interpreted in the context of the relevant Statutes and where there is any difference arising from interpretation, that statutory provisions take precedent. For the sake of clarity, the relevant elements of the statutes not already incorporated in the numbered sections are appended in italics under each subheading

Teaching and ExaminingResearchContributions

Teaching and Examining

  • Contribute to and assist in the delivery of research led teaching, assessment and examining on courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as continuing professional development modules;
  • Supervise research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  • Undertake the development and regular evaluation of modules with reference to content, delivery and assessment;
  • Participate in the development of new curricular initiatives;
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and apply innovative teaching and learning methodologies within the School of Nursing & Midwifery and within other academic units in the University, as appropriate;
  • Contribute to the development of online teaching in the School of Nursing & Midwifery and promote the integration of online and campus-based teaching programmes;
  • Contribute towards the maintenance of academic standards within his/her discipline
  • to give the students attending his/her ordinary lectures assistance in their studies, by advice, by informal instruction, by occasional and periodic examination, and otherwise, as s/he may judge to be expedient; also, to make such arrangements as s/he sees fit to make to meet students who have individual queries;
  • to give instruction to his/her students and assist them in the pursuit of knowledge;
  • to hold, or assist at, all University examinations in the subjects with which s/he is an examiner.

 

Research

  • Engage in productive research and scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge, participate in research activities and publish the research in appropriate peer-reviewed publications, creative works or other forms of scholarship appropriate to the
    discipline;
  • Undertake initiatives in generating research income as appropriate to the discipline;
  • Engage in other scholarly activities relevant to the discipline.

 

Contributions

  • Participate in the administrative activities of the department/school and the academic life of the College and University;
  • Act as a member of such committees as may be required by the University;
  • Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, clinical partners, where appropriate;
  • Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society;
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the head of discipline/department/school
  • to carry out administrative and other appropriate duties lawfully allocated to them within their department or other academic unit;
  • if a member of the Academic Council, to attend its meetings;
  • to serve upon all the committees to which s/he may be appointed by the Governing Body or the Academic Council, and to assist and co-operate with the Governing Body in such other reasonable ways as the Governing Body may prescribe, for the maintenance of discipline and good conduct among the students, or for the general business of the University.

The above listing is not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake duties as can reasonably be expected. All staff are required to be flexible, co-operative and professional within the needs of the post and the Discipline/Department/School, College and University. The University is undertaking a major reform of its internal structures which may necessitate possible future changes in the organisation of its activities.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  1. Have a doctorate degree in midwifery or equivalent area or have an MSc in Midwifery and be registered for a PhD/Doctorate;
  2. A professional qualification in Midwifery;
  3. Hold or have held registration (or be eligible to register) as a Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland;
  4. Evidence of extensive clinical experience in midwifery;
  5. Evidence of having worked as a midwife or equivalent if experience is international.

Desirable Criteria

  1. A qualification in teaching and learning.

 

Teaching and Examining

Essential Criteria

  1. Relevant teaching experience in the area of midwifery;
  2. An ability to contribute across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes;
  3. Evidence of a commitment to excellence in research led teaching;
  4. Evidence of an ability to teach, inspire and supervise students, communicate ideas and concepts in a teaching and learning environment;
  5. Evidence of an understanding of and willingness to use modern teaching technologies and potential for innovative teaching and curriculum development including online modules and programmes.

 

Research

Essential Criteria

  1. Evidence of appropriate research achievement as indicated by published work and other research outputs e.g. conference presentations, peer reviewed papers as appropriate to the discipline;
  2. Evidence of a research strategy with plans for publications and grant applications as relevant relative to stage of career;
  3. Evidence of other relevant scholarly activity;
  4. Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues on research projects, as appropriate to the discipline;
  5. Evidence of ability and willingness to develop collaborative research with Health Service Providers.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Experience of research supervision especially at Bachelors or Masters level.

 

Contributions

Essential Criteria

  1. Administrative experience or evidence of ability to contribute to academic administration;
  2. Experience in or potential to participate in relevant academic or professional associations/bodies as appropriate;
  3. The potential to participate in and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University, the academic discipline and society at large.

 

Other

Essential Criteria

  1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  2. Evidence of ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team;
  3. Ability and willingness to work in a collaborative environment;
  4. An understanding of, and empathy with, the concerns of students;
  5. A commitment to the long-term development of the discipline;
  6. Willingness to travel to clinical sites external to UCC to link with students and the multidisciplinary team and to conduct clinical learning environment audits.

Note: As the university continues to expand and evolve, it is likely that flexibility in regard to the allocation of specific duties will be necessary. Accordingly, the list of duties specified above is not intended to be exclusive or restrictive; duties may be added or withdrawn but any such alteration will take place after consultation with the appointee.

Salary Information

Appointment may be made on the Lecturer (Above the Bar) Salary Scale: €79,185 - €102,549 (Scale B) / €75,338 - €97,420 (Scale A).

Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
