Overview of International Human Rights Law and Public Policy [LLM (International Human Rights Law and Public Policy)] (LLM)

The LLM in International Human Rights Law and Public Policy is an innovative and exciting new LLM programme, which builds on the Law Faculty’s reputation for excellence in international and European human rights law. The programme is taught by a team of academic staff with extensive academic and practical experience in human rights law and public policy. The programme, which includes a core International Human Rights clinic module, is designed specifically to engage students in the practice and policy context of Human Rights Law. Students will benefit from a series of guest seminars with representatives of civil society, Government, international human rights bodies and the world of legal practice.

Taught LLM Scholarships:
Up to two fees scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis across all the LLM Programmes on offer.

What will I be Studying?

The LLM in International Human Rights Law and Public Policy involves students taking the following compulsory Modules (50 credits)

Human Rights in Practice (Clinic) (10 credits)

This unique module will give students an opportunity to engage with the institutions and processes of human rights law in practice. A series of guest contributors from civil society, statutory bodies, human rights organisations and the legal profession will explore with students the mechanisms and processes through which human rights laws are implemented and enforced, and the challenges arising.

Contemporary Issues in International Law (10 credits)

This module gives students a foundation in the core principles and concepts of international law, focussing on contemporary issues and current debates on international law and public policy

LLM (International Human Rights and Public Policy) Thesis (30 credits)

Students select a research topic in the area of human rights law, and following approval, complete a 12,500 word thesis under supervision of a Faculty member. Students complete research methodology training and give an oral presentation on their research in progress.

Optional Modules - 40 credits to be chosen

Students choose at least three modules from the list below;

· International Criminal Law

· Immigration and Refugee Law

· War Law 1: Ius Ad Bellum

· War Law 2: Ius in Bello

· Information Rights Law

· Children’s Rights

· Juvenile Justice

· Child Law (Clinical)

· Terrorism, Dissonance and Criminal Justice

· Disability and the Law

· The Family and the Law

And either one more from the list above or one from the list below:

· Challenges in Medical Law and Policy

· Contemporary Issues in Constitutional Law

· Mental Health Law

· Principles of Environmental Law

Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally:

· (a) Hold a BCL (Hons) Degree from the National University of Ireland with at least Second Class Honours Grade 1 (2:1) or a Second Class Honours LLB Degree from University College Cork.

· (b) Have such other relevant third level educational qualifications and/or professional experience as, in the opinion of the Faculty of law, qualifies the candidate to undertake the LLM (International Human Rights law and Public Policy) degree.

Applications from overseas candidates are welcome and their qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis under (b) above. Non-EU applicants should contact the International Education Office by email at internationalpostgrad@ucc.ie for application details.

The programme can be taken over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent

From 2012, the Law Faculty will use a system of offer rounds to facilitate decision-making and early notification to applicants. Candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Candidates who do not have their final degree marks available may be made a conditional (provisional) offer. The offer round closing dates for taught programmes are as follows:

1st Round Closing Date: 1st May 2012
2nd Round Closing Date: 22 June 2012

3rd Round Closing Date: 24 August 2012
