Mountaineering

Welcome to UCC Mountaineering Club, where members are able to share their love of the outdoors amongst other like-minded individuals! Our club encompasses two disciplines of mountaineering: rock climbing and hiking. Read below to learn more about us!

About Us

Here in UCC Mountaineering Club, we hold regular climbing sessions during the week and we hike every Sunday. We cater for all levels of experience of both sports, so everyone is welcome to join. Outside of our climbing and hiking events, we give everyone a chance to mingle during our evening socials and movie nights, which are held every few weeks

Climbing

We hold club climbing sessions every Monday and Wednesday evening in the Mardyke climbing wall. We encourage those who have never previously tried the sport to join us, we even hold beginner climbing sessions at the start of every semester, where our more experienced members are ready to show you the ropes and welcome you into the club.

At our climbing sessions, students have the option of bouldering, roped climbing or both. Down at the climbing wall we pride ourselves in our welcoming atmosphere, where every climber is equally as encouraging to one another, no matter how new they are to the sport.

Every year we take part in the Irish Climbing Intervarsities, where all university climbing clubs in Ireland compete against each other in an attempt to come out on top. Here in UCCMC, we not only climb indoors, but also outdoors. We organise two outdoor climbing trips during the year, namely our weekend bouldering trip to the Burren in Co. Clare, and our annual week-long trip to Wales, where those who are comfortable with roped climbing are encouraged to attend.

Hiking

We hold hikes every Sunday in different locations in Ireland, mostly throughout Munster. Our hikes are open to those of any level of experience. We hold beginner-friendly hikes at the start of the semester, with the hike difficulty progressing gradually as the semester goes on.

Our hikes are perfect for any outdoor enthusiasts who are looking to explore the beautiful Irish landscape. Every hike is different to the previous one, and while we can't guarantee you perfect weather, what we can offer is a day full of wandering the mountains, taking in the outstanding views, and most importantly having an enjoyable day amongst other hikers out in the fresh air.

We hold a weekend hiking trip every year, as well as our week-long annual trip to Wales. For any hikers who would like to become more involved in the club, we offer the chance to become a hike leader through undergoing mountain skills courses.
