Chess

Welcome to UCC Chess, we're based on campus for our weekly meet up's. We cater for beginners through to advanced.

About Us

UCC Chess Club offers a relaxed environment that helps develop valuable skills such as concentration, patience, hand-eye coordination, and reaction times. These skills are useful for any degree program and life ventures. We encourage everyone to get involved in committee activities, providing a great opportunity to learn how committees work. Senior officers are always available to teach and guide you in an inclusive, risk-free environment.

We participate in several tournaments each year and provide funding for the annual Mulcahy Cup in Cork City. As a result, club members can enjoy free or discounted entries. However, participation in tournaments is not mandatory, and no prior knowledge of chess is required. We welcome everyone who wishes to join and are happy to teach those who want to learn.

Our club meets weekly in the Western Gateway Building, but we don’t expect everyone to attend every week. We’re flexible with attendance, so feel free to drop in whenever you want to play a game. As UCC students, the club is as much yours as it is anyone else’s. Plus, club membership is completely free.

We often host our own events within the university, which are also free to attend. If you have any inquiries, feel free to reach out to us at chess@uccclubs.ie. Our members have competed in events across the country, including the Bunratty Chess Festival.

Chess is a rewarding sport, and any time invested in it is well worth it. We hope to see many new faces in the 2024/25 academic year.
