Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research

A roadmap for the responsible use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools

Welcome

These guidelines provide the UCC Research Community with a roadmap for the responsible use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools. They are designed to help you harness the benefits of GenAI while upholding the highest standards of research integrity, ethics, and compliance with legislation like the EU AI Act. These guidelines apply to all UCC researchers, including academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, research students, and anyone involved in the research process.

These guidelines adopt a 'living document' approach to remain effective and relevant. The field of Generative AI, along with its governing policies, is developing at an unprecedented pace.

Please note that while these guidelines provide a robust framework for researchers today, University College Cork's overarching institutional AI policy is currently in development. As a result, these research-specific guidelines are subject to change and will be systematically updated to ensure full compliance and alignment with:

  • The finalised UCC AI Policy and Statement.
  • New national guidelines from Irish and European Research bodies.
  • Evolving EU legislation, including the AI Act.

We are committed to keeping the research community informed of any significant updates.
