Dr Birgit Greiner – Director of the MSc in Occupational Health
Recognising Dr Birgit Greiner’s contributions to teaching, research, supervision and leadership, in October 2017 UCC awarded Dr Greiner with its Leadership Award, as part of the University’s Staff Recognition Awards. The selection committee determined that Birgit is an exceptional member of staff and demonstrates outstanding leadership and integrity in every aspect of her work. Birgit has built and articulated her academic teaching vision through the development of the MSc in Occupational Health, now accessible internationally as an online programme. The everyday consistent integrity and inspiration which Birgit shows to everyone she comes in contact with, her unwavering personal approach has fostered a positive and supportive culture of the highest achievable standards, never diluted by other potentially mitigating factors. Birgit is a true leader, who knows her values and what she stands for regardless of any internal or external circumstances
Congratulations: MSc Occupational Health Graduate was awarded Ergonomics Prize winner-Emmett O’Keane
Emmett O’Keane received the 2017 Gallwey Prise for the best taught Masters thesis in Ergonomics by the Irish Ergonomics Association. Emmett’s thesis title was ‘‘Prevalence of work-Related Upper Limb Disorders and Work-Related Backpain among Irish Dental Practitioners’. Under supervision of Dr Birgit Greiner, Emmett surveyed a representative sample of Irish Dentists about their musculoskeletal health and physical and psychosocial work risks. He found alarmingly high rates of musculoskeletal disorders in these professionals and developed ergonomic recommendations how to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders in dentists. Publication in a scientific journal is in preparation.
