07 Jul 2023The School of Computer Science & Information Technology at UCC is internationally recognised for its research on innovative networking and systems research. It also plays a lead role in the national SFI-funded CONNECT Centre for Future Networks & Communications and the SFI-funded Blended Autonomous Vehicle (BAV) spoke, a multi-centre research programme.We are now seeking to fill a Research Fellow position on a SFI CONNECT (BAV) Targeted project with an industry partner. Linked to the European C-Roads initiative, roadside communications equipment is being rolled out on parts of the national road network. This will facilitate a number of advisory and traffic efficiency services. The technology is a combination of wireless and emerging cellular standards. This research project will provide a comprehensive simulation analysis to study the communications scalability of providing such services when connected vehicle penetration rates increase. This study will consider a variety of conditions to determine reliability of such services. Innovative approaches should be proposed to improve the reliability of the system and with the performance of system evaluated to support future envisioned connected vehicular services and with a future focus on increased autonomy.Read more -

Best Paper Prize awarded to Dr. Darijo Raca
16 Apr 2021Dr. Darijo Raca, a recent PhD graduate, receives the award of Best Paper of 2020 at a virtual ceremony in the School of Computer Science & Information Technology, UCC on 15th April 2021.
Title of Paper: On Leveraging Machine and Deep Learning for Throughput Prediction in Cellular Networks: Design, Performance, and Challenges.
Supervisors: Professor Cormac Sreenan and Dr Ahmed Zahran
The paper was published in the IEEE Communications Magazine, vol. 58, no. 3, pp. 11-17 in March 2020.
The award was made after a competitive process overseen by a panel of academic experts.
Darijo Raca’s research was funded by Science Foundation Ireland.

Professor Cormac Sreenan, Dr Ahmed Zahran and Dr. Darijo Raca (recent CSIT PhD graduate) are inventors on a new US patent (No. 10,693,575) entitled "System and method for throughput prediction for cellular networks".
01 Jul 2020This is a joint invention with AT&T Labs - Research (USA) and arose from the iVID research project that was funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The invention uses machine and deep learning techniques to predict the data throughput of wireless links in mobile phone networks. Having accurate predictions can be used by applications to improve their performance, one example being video streaming apps, which can use this information to decide on what video quality can be sustained without causing playback stalls.

In this regard, we are now seeking to fill a Post-Doctoral position, making an appointment up to the level of Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher depending on the career stage of the successful applicant.
The appointed person will be expected to make significant contributions to the direction and progress of the project, working closely with the project investigators Professors Sreenan and Brown, and with the company personnel.
We especially seek applications from candidates with expertise in cloud/edge resource optimisation and workload prediction.

ORCA 2nd Call for Experiment awarded to CONNECT Edge Research Fellow
26 Feb 2019Hossein Ajorloo's application to the ORCA 2nd Call for Experiment (a project funded by H2020 from European Commission) is successfully selected to be a winner. The budget he proposed (€50,000) has been accepted. This is to support his experiments on millimetre wave wireless systems. Hossein is an EDGE Marie Curie Research Fellow at the CONNECT Centre in University College Cork.

Cork Open Access Archive (CORA) is UCC’s own repository and in the last six months alone, over 256,600 publications have been downloaded. When we look at CS specifically, over 56,000 publications have been downloaded since CORA was initiated, with over 10,000 of those in the last six months alone.

Information Centric Networking course in UCC, 16th June 2016
12 May 2016As part of the HEA PRTLI-funded Telecommunications Graduate Initiative (TGI), the Department of Computer Science, University College Cork, will be will be hosting a 1 day course designed for Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers who are working in areas related to networking. It is also open to industry partners of TGI institutions. Registration is required but there is no fee to attend.

18 Mar 2016The Mobile and Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL) in the Department of Computer Science at UCC is an internationally recognised research centre focused on innovative networking research. The SFI-funded CONNECT Centre for Future Networks & Communications recognizes the centrality of networks to the economy, to society at large, and to Ireland’s future development. Hence, the centre brings together a number of major Irish research initiatives to focus on future networks and communications and to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ for research, education and innovation within this domain. In due course, a team of researchers will work on CONNECT in UCC, hosted in MISL. The Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher will work primarily on the topic of dense WiFi networks, working closely with the sponsoring industry partner and Prof. Sreenan, the project Principal Investigator. The project will involve a combination of analytical/optimisation methodologies together with testbed-based evaluation. The appointee will be expected to make significant contributions to the direction and progress of the project. Applicants are invited from those with a PhD qualification, prior post-doctoral experience and publications in a directly relevant area.

The Mobile and Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL) in the Department of Computer Science at UCC is an internationally recognised research centre focused on innovative networking research. iVID is a new 4-year research project funded by Science Foundation Ireland to investigate the use of software defined networking techniques to optimise the delivery of streaming video. A team of 5 researchers will work on the iVID project. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to make significant contributions to the direction and progress of the project in addition to working closely with the other team members and Prof. Sreenan, the project Principal Investigator. Applicants are invited from those with a PhD qualification and publications in a directly relevant area. Applications from PhD candidates with a firm date for their viva of before the end of October 2014 will also be considered.

UCC-led GINSENG research project exhibited at CeBIT Trade Fair
13 Mar 2012The GINSENG research project, led by Prof. Cormac Sreenan of UCC Computer Science, was exhibited March 6-10 2012 at CeBIT, the world's largest ICT trade fair. GINSENG is funded by the European Commission and involves 8 partners from Ireland, England, Sweden, Cyprus, Germany and Portugal. The project solved the problem of providing performance control for wireless sensor networks, paving the way for commercial applications of this emerging technology for real-time industrial monitoring and control.

06 Sep 2011The Mobile & Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL) conducts basic and applied research in computer networking for mobile/wireless and multimedia systems. Led by Prof. Sreenan, the laboratory is supported externally by several Irish and international companies, Enterprise Ireland, the EU and Science Foundation Ireland.
Applications are now invited for the following position on a new applied research project (BACOPT-II) that will commence in October 2011. This project builds on the recently completed BACOPT-I project and will again involve very close research collaboration with an established telecoms company who part-fund the project together with Enterprise Ireland. The focus of BACOPT-II is to design novel techniques for optimising data delivery over backhaul links, with an emphasis on bandwidth-demanding video content and wireless access networks.

Research Partnership established between UCC and Altobridge
13 Apr 2010A research project which will enable cost-effective mobile internet access for remote communities has been announced between UCC and Altobridge Ltd. The UCC-led project, BACOPT ("Back-haul Optimisation in Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks"), which will lower the cost of 3G mobile Internet in remote villages, airplanes, boats and oil platforms, is being led by Professor Cormac Sreenan of UCC’s Computer Science Department.

MISL paper selected as "Spotlight" in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing
27 Apr 2010A paper co-authored by Dr. Ahmed Zahran and Prof. Cormac J. Sreenan of the Mobile & Internet Systems Laboratory has been selected as the "Spotlight"article from the June 2010 issue of IEEE journal "Transactions on Mobile Computing". Entitled "Threshold-Based Media Streaming Optimization for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks", the paper presents a novel framework for optimizing the delivery of audio/video to mobile devices using heterogeneous networks such as 3G and WiFi.

30 Nov 2009A decade of collaboration between University College Cork (UCC) and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) was celebrated today (Monday, November 30th 2009) by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy and the President of CIT, Dr Brendan Murphy. A Memorandum of Co-operation was signed in the presence of the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Batt O’Keeffe, at a special ceremony in Cork. The extensive co-operation between both institutions over the past 10 years has spearheaded the drive in Ireland for greater cross-fertilization in the higher education sector.

UCC-led European Project, GINSENG, to improve performance control in sensor networks
15 Oct 2008An EU-funded project on research into how greater performance control can be achieved in sensor networks for use in everything from patient monitoring to oil refinery control, is being led by Professor Cormac Sreenan of UCC's Computer Science Department. The €4.8 million GINSENG project under the EU's Framework 7 Programme, involves seven other partners - University of Coimbra, Swedish Institute of Computer Science, TU Braunschweig, Lancaster University, University of Cyprus, SAP (Germany) and GALP Energia (Portugal).
