JustCities Hub Objectives

• Rethinking frameworks for delivering urban sustainability through partnership, experimentation, and service provision.
• Critically reviewing existing climate action service infrastructure for supporting just transitions at city level.
• Mobilising and supporting innovation through small transdisciplinary action-based interventions.
• Developing a shared understanding of assets and opportunities for a just transition in the city underpinned by a commitment to deliberative engagement and transdisciplinary learning.
• Developing an integrative model for climate engagement that supports and enables a diverse and vibrant democracy in the city.

City-level Climate Services

• A comparative mapping of climate service infrastructure at city level focused on Cork and Belfast.
• Creation of city-level multi-stakeholder advisory forum to capture state-of play, problems and solutions.
• This exploration will work toward developing a more comprehensive understanding and categorisation of services available. And which will be viewed through a climate justice lens.

Seeds of Change

• Creation of a broad portfolio of micro interventions.
• Support the implementation of the three pilots, tapping into a rich ecology of skills, knowledge and interests in both Cork and Belfast, and capture results to explore ways to maximise the long-term potential of micro-interventions. Micro-interventions may include sustainable cooking demos, awareness festivals, family friendly active travel solutions, nature-based solutions for biodiversity, clean-ups, energy efficiency campaigns among others.
• Continuity, long-term benefits and behavioural impacts within these will be evaluated by the team. The core value in this work is exploring ways to ensure that the ‘seeds of change’ interventions can continue to flourish and grow.

Foresight & Innovation towards Climate Justice

Within JustCities Hub we are investigating how justice, resiliency and vibrancy can be embedded in cities work towards climate goals. Within this we are seeking to generate a foresight and innovation masterplan aimed at bolstering city climate justice through co-creation and future-oriented activities.

• Co-creating & forecasting innovative solutions at city level.
• Develop steps to activate spaces, structures and institutions in order to enable the emergence of innovative civic engagement opportunities for climate justice.
• Integrate quantitative and qualitative foresight methodologies to bring about new conceptions of the future beyond a more static forecasting of ‘probable’ futures and toward conceptions to constructively engage with ‘preferable’ futures.
