School Involvement in Global Commemorations for Shakespeare 400

26 Apr 2016

Dr Edel Semple will be delivering a lecture in Belfast and convening a seminar in Stratford

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and commemorations are taking place around the world to mark this historic occasion. UCC's Lecturer in Shakespeare Studies Dr Edel Semple has been participating in and organising several events. At the Shakespeare Association of America conference in New Orleans last month, Dr Semple spoke on films of Coriolanus and Macbeth in the seminar "Masculinity and the Body in Contemporary Shakespearean Film and Performance". Dr Semple is an invited speaker at the Irish Renaissance Seminar in Queen's University Belfast on Saturday 7th May (all welcome). Dr Semple is also co-convening a seminar entitled "Paratheatrical Entertainments in Shakespeare’s London and London’s Shakespeare" as part of the World Shakespeare Congress in Stratford Upon Avon and London this August. This seminar explores the entertainment industry of early modern London, from civic pageants to bear-baiting to executions, that informed, complemented, and competed with Shakespeare's drama.
