Addressing Racism Through Creative Dialogue in "The Elephant in the Room" Workshop

23 Apr 2024
Praxis Workshop 2024

The Praxis Project hosted another interesting workshop which took place on Friday 19th and Tuesday 23rd of April. "The Elephant in the Room" workshop was aimed at staff and students who came together to work on the start of what is a longer-term research project relating to racism in higher education.

Racism can sometimes be the elephant in the room! Led by artist Tom Campbell, we began our journey by making papier-mâché elephants and opening discussions about personal experiences and systemic challenges related to racism and anti-racism in third level education. The need for a day and a half working together was helpful for trust building and a safe environment within which we could discuss issues relating to racism. Detailed notes of our conversation will form part of an ongoing research project, which will involve our ‘elephants’ moving around campus asking people to share their stories or experiences of racism on campus. Watch out for an ‘elephant’ coming your way and please do join in this innovative research process! The stories will in turn form part of our ongoing research study and will be accompanied by a resource which will support us all in our efforts to ensure a truly proactive anti-racist campus.

Thanks to all staff and students who participated in these very inspiring workshops. Our thanks to Nano Nagle for accommodating us and thanks to artist Tom Campbell for his expert facilitation.
