Professor Patrick O'Shea, President of UCC

 ‌Professor Patrick O’Shea became the 15th President of University College Cork on 1st February 2017.  A UCC Physics graduate and former Vice President and Chief Research Officer at the University of Maryland in the US, Professor O’Shea was at the helm of a $500 million (€470m) per annum research and innovation enterprise. When he was Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of a Maryland, Prof O’Shea co-founded the Maryland Cybersecurity Center and later, the Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students.

DSI Michael Gubbins - Garda Cyber Crime Bureau

Michael has been a member of an Garda Síochána for over 28 years and has been engaged in the area of computer forensics and cybercrime investigation since 1997 when he was first assigned to the Computer Crime Investigation Unit (CCIU). During this period Michael has worked as a Detective Garda, Detective Sergeant and Detective Inspector at the CCIU. As of the 1st September 2016 Michael is now the Detective Superintendent in charge of the newly formed Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau.  Michael has been Financial Manager for a number of Garda AGIS & ISEC projects including the ISEC 2008 project " Cybercrime investigation — Developing and disseminating an accredited International Training programme for the future" which resulted in 28 European Law Enforcement Officers including Michael being awarded a Masters in Forensic Computing & Cybercrime Investigation (MSc FCCI) from University College Dublin (UCD).  Michael represents an Garda Síochána on various Europol & European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) fora including the European Computer Training and Education Group (ECTEG), European Multidisciplinary Platform against Criminal Threats (EMPACT) and the European Union Cybercrime Task Force (EUCTF) of which he is a board member.  As head of the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau Michael participates at the Banking Payment Federation Ireland (BPFI), High Tech Crime Forum and the Irish Telecommunications Security Fraud Forum (ITSFF).

Cyber Security in a Digital University - Rosie Coffey, UCC

Rosie Coffey is the IT Security Officer for University College Cork.  Prior to joining UCC in 2015, Rosie was Solutions Architect for multinational PepsiCo Ireland. She has had a variety of roles throughout her career including Oracle DBA Lead, SAP MII Technical Lead and in security.

Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity and Cyberfraud - Professor Barry O'Sullivan

Professor and Founding Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, University College Cork

Barry O’Sullivan (PhD, FEurAI, MRIA) is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science in University College Cork. He is a founding director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, and serves as the current Deputy President of the European Artificial Intelligence Association which has over 4500 members across 30 countries. He is the AI Expert-in-Resident at SOSV, one of the world’s most successful venture capital firms, through which he advises dozens of startups around the world each year.

In 2013 he received a UCC Leadership Award and won the Association for Constraint Programming Distinguished Service Award in 2014. He was named Science Foundation Ireland Researcher of the Year for 2016, UCC Researcher of the Year for 2017, and was elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2017, Ireland’s highest academic accolade.

Barry has been involved in raising almost €200 million in research funding from national, international, industry, and gift sources, over the past 20 years. His areas of expertise include artificial intelligence, operations research, constraint programming, data mining and machine learning. He is the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He co-established and co-edits, with Professor Michael Wooldridge (Oxford), Springer’s book series on “Artificial Intelligence: Foundations, Theory, and Algorithms.” He is a well-known public speaker and commentator on artificial intelligence.

Barry is Managing Partner of his own AI consultancy firm, AI Machina, with an international client base.

 

 

 

D/Chief Pat Lordan - Garda National Economic Crime Bureau

Head of the – Garda National Economic Crime Bureau including the Irish Financial Intelligence Unit

Pat who is originally from Drimoleague, West Cork, joined An Garda Síochána in 1986 and has served mainly in the Dublin Region but also worked in the South Eastern and Eastern Garda Regions. Pat has worked in Community Policing, Drugs, Prostitution Investigations, Serious Crime Investigations, Fraud and Financial Investigations, Financial Intelligence and Cybercrime. He has held the position of Detective in all ranks and has been at the forefront of  the investigation of serious crime for 24 years. Pat is a Senior Investigating Officer (S.I.O.) and  holds a B.Sc in Management Law from Trinity College Dublin.

In 2015, Pat took up his current position as Head of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau. The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau is involved in many high profile investigations and is supported by Gardaí throughout the country trained in Fraud Investigation. Pat and his team have developed a Post Graduate Certificate in Fraud and E-Crime Investigation in association with University College Dublin. Pat was also the lead representative from An Garda Síochána  in the recent Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Review of Ireland.
