A man enters the kitchen. He lifts the kettle from the hob and sets it sideways on the fire. He rights the breakfast things on the humpy tray. Later he goes to the jakes. He goes through the backdoor into the garden. Careful not to dirty his trousers he sits asquat the cuckstool. He allows his bowels to ease themselves. Tearing his newspaper into small squares he wipes himself, girds up his trousers, and walks out onto the bright side of the street. James Joyce tells the story of a day in the life of a city, through the bodily functions of Leopold Bloom. Eating, tasting, digesting and defecating give texture and depth to a gastrocritical reading of Ulysses.
