Date: Friday 27th February - Sunday 1st March 2026 Venue: Boole 2 Lecture Theatre, Boole Building, University College Cork (Main Campus)
The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork is proud to host the 69th Irish Geoscience Research Meeting in 2026. This annual event, widely known as the IGRM, showcases the diversity of cutting edge geoscience research that is currently breaking new ground in Ireland - and across the world. The schedule of events at IGRM 2026 kicks off on Friday February 27th with an icebreaker reception in the “Domain of the Dinosaurs” exhibition in the Glucksman Gallery followed by an evening Keynote Lecture. Two exciting days of talks and poster exhibitions will take place over the weekend, with bountiful opportunities to meet, greet and network among the attendees. A second Keynote Lecture on Saturday evening, February 28th, will be followed by the IGRM 2026 conference dinner, to which all attendees are invited. With Keynote Lectures by leading, globally-recognised speakers, to research talks and posters by both established and emerging early-career postgraduates, there will be a wide variety of geoscience themes presented. Whether making first contact with a future collaborator, or bumping into a colleague from years gone by, IGRM is a key date on the Irish geoscience calendar and an unmissable geoscience research event in 2026.

Information for Presenters
Oral Presentation:
- Oral presentations are 12 mins (12 min talk with 2 min warning at 10 min mark)
- 3 mins for questions (presenters will not be permitted to extend their talk into this time)

In the event of a high demand for presentation slots than can be included in each session, IGRM 2026 reserve the right to select abstracts based on the research quality, relevance to the meeting and a balance across themes and/or presenter groups (with some preference given to late-stage PhD students).
Poster Presentation:

- Posters will be on display in the IGRM Hub (Main Restaurant) in the vicinity of all receptions, coffee/tea breaks and lunches.
- There will be a dedicated poster session on Sunday morning.
- Undergraduate students are invited to submit posters exhibiting field mapping or laboratory research studies.
- Preference will be given to postgraduate research posters, and IGRM 2026 cannot guarantee the inclusion of undergraduate research posters.
- In the event of a higher demand for poster space, IGRM 2026 reserve the right to select abstracts based on the research quality, relevance to the meeting and a balance across themes and/or presenter groups.
Icebreaker reception at the “Domain of the Dinosaurs” exhibition
Domain of the Dinosaurs is a pioneering exhibition of scientific and artistic displays that has been developed at University College Cork by Maria McNamara, Professor of Palaeontology, and Fiona Kearney, Director of the Glucksman. It features over 250 real fossil specimens from land, sea and air, bringing the world of the Irish dinosaurs to life. Five Irish artists were commissioned to bring a creative lens to the deep time involved in paleontological research, providing an imaginative response to Ireland's rich fossil record that pre-dates the dinosaurs by millions of years. The commissioned artists are Tom Climent, Johanna Connor, Damien Flood, Angela Gilmour, and Emma O'Hara. Domain of the Dinosaurs is supported by University College Cork, Research Ireland, the European Union, the Arts Council of Ireland and private philanthropy through Cork University Foundation.
IGRM 2026 Keynote Lecture - Friday Evening
Speaker: Professor Erin Saupe, Oxford University Lecture Title: Determining the Correlates of Extinction on Long Time Scales Abstract: Most species that have ever lived are now extinct. Therefore, to understand the processes that generate life on Earth, we need to look to the past. The record of past life allows us to test whether there are particular factors that make some species more susceptible to extinction than others. I will discuss some of my recent work on the factors that govern marine invertebrate extinction over millions of years, and how these factors can be used to better understand the present-day biodiversity crisis. Date: 27th February 2026 Time: 8.00 pm Venue: Boole 2 Lecture Theatre, Boole Building, University College Cork
IGRM 2026 Keynote Lecture - Saturday Evening
Speaker: Dr Susanne Schwenzer, Open University Lecture Title: The Geology of Mars Abstract: To be confirmed Date: 28th February 2026 Time: 8.00 pm Venue: Boole 2 Lecture Theatre, Boole Building, University College Cork
