UCC Graduates Shine in Social Citizenship & Disability-Inclusive Practice Certificates

17 Nov 2023

UCC proudly celebrates the outstanding achievements of 15 graduates from its new Certificates in Social Citizenship and Disability-Inclusive Practice. These one-year courses, offered through ACE at UCC in collaboration with the ID+ project at UCC aims to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities and equip these students to champion disability inclusion.

Certificate in Social Citizenship: Fostering Independence and Diversity

The Certificate in Social Citizenship focuses on empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities, providing them with skills to enhance self-reliance and independence. Grounded in the values of respect, diversity, and inclusivity, the course follows a rights-based agenda. Students engage in three distinct ways:

· Core Modules: Exclusively with fellow Social Citizenship students, covering areas such as Information and Communication Technology, Social and Cultural Studies, Personal, Social and Civic Engagement, and Career Development and Work Placement Preparation.

· Co-learning Modules: Shared with students from various university courses, allowing Social Citizenship students to choose from diverse "strands" like Including Children, People and Diversity, Performing Arts, Health and Wellbeing, Sustainable Living, and The World Around Us.

· Work Placement: A three-month practical experience, enhancing skills gained in the course.

Certificate in Disability-Inclusive Practice: Advocating for Inclusion

The one-year Certificate in Disability-Inclusive Practice equips students with the knowledge and skills to champion disability inclusion. Course modules include statutory frameworks for disability inclusion, finding and using one's voice, presentation and communication skills, reviewing and auditing skills, and employment and social enterprise. A crucial component is the incorporation of work placement to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
