General Advice For Returning Students
Returning students must begin considering their accommodation options in January in advance of the coming year. If you are already living away from home then, where possible, you should begin discussing the arrangements for coming academic year with your current provider at that time.
If this is not possible or you do not wish to stay in the same location then you can consult general advice on sourcing accommodation or, if necessary the information available to those who have begun their search later in the year.
1. Check move-out date for the current academic year and move-in date for next.
It’s important to check your move out dates for this academic year. Make sure to check important details, like, damages in the room/home and the deposit refund process.
2. Speak to landlord/homeowner or provider if you want to stay in your current accommodation
If you are happy to stay again next year, you should be checking availability and the re-application process.
3. Notice period if wanting to move out of current accommodation
If you do not want to stay in the same accommodation next year, especially in private rentals/digs, you may need to inform your landlord so they can begin looking for new tenants.
4. Consider budget for next year
Although it may seem far away, it is important to begin thinking of budget for the next semester and what kind of accommodation options will be feasible for you.
5. Speak to others
Word-of-mouth is the number one way students find accommodation. Ask people in your course/social groups what they are doing for next year. Is anyone moving/looking for a housemate? Many courses will have a group chat, it’s very common for students to use these to let classmates know their looking.
