The Lough Hyne Research Team, School of BEES/ERI University College Cork and the Skibbereen Heritage Centre has been selected as County Winner in the National Heritage Week Awards for the Touch Tanks event at Lough Hyne for the Cork County Council local authority area.
The Lough Hyne Research Team, School of Biological, Earth and Environmenta Sciences, UCC (Prof. Rob McAllen, Prof. Ruth Ramsay, Dr Mark Jessopp, Mr Luke Harman and Ms. Valerie Hickey) and collaborator Terri Kearney from the Skibbereen Heritage Centre have been awarded Cork County Winners in this year’s National Heritage Week Awards.
This is in recognition of the Touch Tanks outreach event held each year at the Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve, West Cork. This hugely popular event has been running since 2006 (apart from a two-year COVID hiatus) and provides an opportunity for people to interact with marine animals usually hidden from sight beneath the waves and provides a great opportunity to raise awareness of the marine environment.
The award is fantastic recognition of the outreach work of the UCC Lough Hyne team and its long standing collaboration with the Skibbereen Heritage Centre.
