Is Ireland vulnerable to power blackouts like Spain and Portugal?

After last Mondays, electricity grids across the Iberian Peninsula failed almost simultaneously, cutting off power to tens of millions, MaREI/ERI’s Dr. Paul Deane, Senior Lecturer in Clean Energy Futures at University College Cork, spoke to the Journal.ie about how Ireland is ahead of the game when it comes to the technical operation of power systems with lots of wind generation.

Paul explained that we don’t fully know what happened in Spain, but why many people are talking about power system inertia and why no power system ever was or ever will be immune to big failures like we saw this week.
