Ireland’s State of the Environment Report 2024

Ireland’s State of Environment Report 2024 presents the most recent evaluation of Ireland’s environment – our air, waters, soil, biodiversity – and how our society impacts on it.  It also provides an update on the environmental challenges that we face, nationally and globally.

The EPA produces state of the environment reports on a four-yearly cycle in support of action to protect and manage the environment. These reports provide timely information and knowledge to the public, policy-makers and key economic sectors. Ireland’s State of Environment Report 2024 is the EPA’s eighth report in the series.

MaREI/ERI Director Prof Brian Ó Gallachóir contributed to Chapter 12 Environment and Energy which is available here.

The Energy key chapter messages focus on the need to accelerate onshore and offshore wind and solar power, the benefits of using electricity in heat and transport alongside the risks of data centre demand growth, the essential role of electricity grid infrastructure and the need for zero emissions fuels and negative emissions technologies.
