MSc Redesigning the Post-Industrial City [RePIC] is a two-year Taught Joint-Master Degree with 120 ECTS at Level 9 NQF - offered by eight of the 10 European Partner Universities in the UNIC alliance. It was the first Post-Graduate Programme seeking accreditation under this framework inside UCC and within the UNIC Alliance – and the first Course nationally (Ireland) to use the “European Approach” for the Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes.

As an inter-disciplinary Programme, the lead academic units in UCC are Architecture and Geography who are represented by the Joint Programme Directors, Dr Jason O’Shaughnessy and Dr Denis Linehan. Colleagues in UCC’s Civic and Community Engagement Office are also involved in delivering a number of integrated CityLabs as part of the Programme. The programme began in September 2023 and will use the ECTS credit system to facilitate the recognition of qualifications and mobility periods abroad – and   students are currently in Ruhr-Universität Bochum before coming to UCC in January 2024.

The development of RePIC has arisen from UCC’s participation in The European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition (UNIC) and its decision to invest in this European University alliance to further the strategic goals of the University. Working with each of the local municipalities on specific CityLab challenge areas and the Urban Agenda for the EU, the ambition is to build a unique innovation community committed to the co-production of more sustainable urban futures. At its core, the Course is learner-centred -- enabling learning differentiation based on modern teaching formats and involving student and staff mobility.

Earlier this year, the RePIC Programme has secured €5,742,000 of funding via the prestigious Erasmus+ Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) grant. The grant enables RePIC to fund scholarships for both European and non-European students – and designed to sustain the programme’s ambitious offerings.
