Recent Promotions in the School of Engineering & Architecture

Congratulations to Dr Marguerite Nyhan who  has been recently promoted to Senior Lecturer in Future Sustainability & Environmental Engineering at UCC. She is based within the School of Engineering & Architecture and is lead Principal Investigator on multiple research projects in the Environmental Research Institute and the MaREI Centre for Energy, Climate & Marine.  

Dr Nyhan founded and now directs the Future Sustainability Research Group which harnesses new and emerging technologies in the development of intelligent solutions for sustainable, net zero, healthy, liveable and equitable urban areas. Marguerite is a prolific scholar and has interdisciplinary expertise in sustainable cities, urban environmental engineering, emissions modelling, urban analytics, population exposure modelling and environmental epidemiological modelling methods. 

 

She has been awarded over €6.5 million as lead Principal Investigator for both ground-breaking research and pioneering educational programmes. She has led several research projects in the broad areas of climate and sustainability that have been funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and government agencies. For example, she led the EPA-funded “C-Change” project which focused on supporting Ireland’s Climate Action Plan and the National Dialogue on Climate Action. She leads the SFI-funded “Environmental Intelligence” Frontiers of the Future project focused on sustainable and healthy cities and she recently led a team in modelling and mapping emissions for Cork City Council to inform the city’s Climate Action Plan and support its work as part of the “100 climate-neutral and smart cities” EU Mission.  Dr Nyhan leads “Sustainable Futures” at UCC which focuses on interdisciplinary sustainability education. This university-wide and nationally coordinated initiative has been funded to the value of €5.3 million by the Higher Education Authority. As part of this, she set up and directs the HDip in Sustainability & Climate Action for Enterprise as well as the PG Cert and the MSc in Sustainability in Enterprise. Dr Nyhan also founded the Sustainable Futures Lab at UCC. Marguerite has world-leading international research experience from her work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in Boston as well as at the United Nations in New York. Marguerite has a PhD from Trinity College Dublin and was a Fulbright Scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
