In August 2024, Dr Ashleigh Byrne-O’Brien passed away unexpectedly at the age of 38. A much-loved Research and Innovation Coordinator in the College of Medicine and Health, Ashleigh was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to supporting students and research.
In her memory, her husband, family, and friends established this fund to support student research and academic development in areas Ashleigh cared deeply about. University College Cork is honoured to recognise her lasting impact through these annual awards.
The Dr Ashleigh Byrne O’Brien SURE Award supports undergraduate students in undertaking short summer research projects through the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) programme in the College of Medicine and Health.
This competitive award is designed to develop students’ research skills and foster an early interest in academic research. It is open to full-time undergraduate students in health-related disciplines who are not in their final year and are supervised by a College of Medicine and Health faculty member.
