Gabriel Doherty was a member of staff in the History Department from 1993 until his tragic and unexpected passing in November 2024. He was a greatly respected teacher and an essential team player involved in the running of the History Department, as Exams Officer, etc. His outreach to schools and local history societies was prodigious. His area of expertise was the Irish Revolutionary period, and he was involved in organising many high-level conferences, contributed important books and articles, and spoke authoritatively on his subject on radio and TV. For many years Gabriel taught the core foundation course in modern Irish history to First Arts History students.
This prize is awarded for the best modern Irish history essay submitted by a First Arts History student.
