Welcome to the UCC Department of Radiology Website
The Department of Radiology/Medical Imaging was founded in UCC in July 2005 with the appointment of first Professor of Radiology. The department was founded in recognition of the pivotal role radiology/medical imaging now plays in medical diagnosis and patient management. The
Medical School at UCC therefore acknowledges that it is imperative that radiology/medical imaging should be integrated into the undergraduate medical curriculum. This integration has begun, and our department is now involved in teaching in each year of medical undergraduate training beginning with anatomy and pathology in the pre-clinical years and with clinical medicine, surgery, paediatrics and medical imaging in the clinical years. This teaching is delivered in many ways including didactic lectures, small group interactive learning groups, which encourage active student participation, and in Problem Based Learning which utilises integrated case studies which include imaging. Teaching is based at UCC main campus, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex and at UCC-affiliated teaching hospitals.
The Department of Radiology is developing a research programme in Diagnostic imaging focusing at present on clinical research in diagnostic imaging and developing capability for valuable collaboration with academic physicians in other clinical departments. Funding has been secured for preliminary programmes in education and clinical research.
In parallel with the above educational and research programmes, the UCC Department of Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging is working closely with post-graduate programmes in radiology including the Pre-fellowship Training Programme in Diagnostic Imaging of the Faculty of Radiologists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Based at Cork University Hospital and
Mercy University Hospital ). It also participates in the administration of the Southern Radiological Society (SRS) a society which now meets monthly in Brookfield House and aims to strengthen links between radiologists from medical institutions in the
Munster region, thereby fulfilling potential for education and research. The Department of Radiology/Diagnostic imaging has also developed and administers an Imaging Module for the Masters in Sports Medicine Course at UCC which is administered by Dr. Michael Molloy and Dr. Fionnuala Quigley.
UCC Radiology Department wishes to acknowledge the huge contribution of Dr. Patrick McLaughlin in designing this website.
