About PeatQuest
Peatlands only occupy 3% of the global land area but contain about 25% of global soil carbon – twice as much as the world’s forests. Despite their importance, peatlands and the carbon they contain are under threat including from climate warming, land-use change, wildfires, pollution and sea-level rise. There has been a large research effort over recent decades to understand more about peatlands but there are still many unanswered questions.
PeatQuest wants to find the most crucial questions that still need answers in peatland research. These questions will help guide peatland stakeholders by suggesting future projects and showing important research topics and priorities for the next decade and beyond. The project has two parts:
- Part 1 of the project - we are asking people who work with peatlands, those who fund research, policymakers and local community groups or individuals active in peatland areas worldwide to think of the most important peatland questions that still need answers. You can take part in the survey following the link below.
- Part 2 of the project (the prioritisation stage) - we will invite a selection of the world’s peatland community to prioritise the questions collected in Part 1, to create a list of the most important questions in peatland research, that if answered, can help us manage and use peatlands more wisely all over the world.
