Biography

Gavin is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the MaREI Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy, currently examining the interactions between marine top predators and shipping activity.

Gavin graduated with a BSc. (Hons) in Zoology from University College Cork in 2015. He went on to complete his PhD entitled “Developing and assessing methods to census and monitor burrow-nesting seabirds in Ireland” in August 2018. The PhD research was funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and supervised by Prof. John Quinn and Dr. Mark Jessopp.

Research Interests

Gavin’s research interests are centered to applied ornithology and throughout his bachelors, this interest was geared towards marine ecology. He is interested in long-term monitoring studies, primarily the effects of anthropogenic activities and climate change on the population dynamics and distribution of seabirds. Gavin’s PhD research directly informed the methodologies used by NPWS to fulfill their international obligations to report the conservation status of these populations. Throughout his PhD he developed an interest in spatial statistics, pursuing this interest in his current research during the Post-Doctoral position in MaREI.
