Microbiology

Eleven Microbiology students were conferred at the Summer Conferring Ceremonies, University College Cork, on 13 June 2013.

Professor Alan Dobson was recently elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and was formally Admitted to the Academy in a ceremony which took place at Academy house in Dublin on 31 May 2013.

As part of a national fundraising initiative for Temple Street Children's University Hospital, the Microbiology Society, UCC, organised a bake sale on Friday the 3rd of May. The Great Irish Bake, now in its fifth year, raises funds for Temple Street Children's University Hospital. 

Five Microbiology students were conferred at the Spring Conferring Ceremonies, University College Cork, on 21 February 2013.

At the 13th Irish National Cystic Fibrosis Conference held in Killarney on Jan 31st- Feb 1st 2013 the first prize of best research poster was awarded to Ms Kate Twomey. Kate is a final year PhD student in the Department of Microbiology under the supervision of Dr Robert Ryan.

Congratulations to Shi-qi An, who successfully defended her PhD thesis in Guangxi University, Nanning, China on December 3^rd, 2012.

The inaugural 2012 UCC Research Awards were presented on Monday 19 November, celebrating UCC researchers who have made exceptional and influential research contributions. Dr Marcus Claesson, Microbiology, was joint recipient of the Early Stage Researcher of the Year award.

New research published in the journal Nature shows that a relationship exists between diet, gut bacteria and the health of older Irish people. The findings provide exciting new opportunities for the food industry as there is now the scientific basis for developing foods to promote healthier ageing.

Dr Robert Ryan has been awarded the 2012 SfAM (Society for Applied Microbiology) WH Pierce Memorial Prize in recognition of his work aimed at understanding the complex interplay between bacterial pathogens during polymicrobial infection.
