Two 2nd Year students from Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig who hope to compete in the 2012 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition were given a helping hand this week by Dr Max Dow. The students approached Dr Dow about characterizing and examining microorganisms isolated from make-up brushes and test pads from leading beauty salons and department stores.

Dr Jerry Reen, a postdoctoral researcher at the the BIOMERIT Research Centre, Microbiology Department, UCC achieved first place in the postdoctoral category award for this year’s University College Cork, BioSciences Institute Researcher of the Year competition and went on to achieve 3rd place in the national competition.

A better understanding of how bacterial toxins cause common human diseases may lead to their improved treatment and prevention according to a paper just published by Irish and US scientists in Nature Reviews Microbiology. Scientists discuss the identification, genetics and biochemistry of streptolysin S (SLS), a bacterial toxin produced by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes.
