Welcome to Lir National Ocean Test Facility

Lir National Ocean Test Facility is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for laboratory testing of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy devices.

Lir NOTF houses Ireland’s only infrastructure for small to medium scale laboratory testing of ocean and maritime systems, and has expert support personnel and a track record stretching back to 1977. We engage with industry and researchers to support the development of these emerging technologies.

Reputed for our contributions to wave, tidal and offshore wind energy development. We are also known for our work with floating structures, offshore structures, coastal engineering including breakwaters and harbours, hydrodynamics, scour, vessels and offshore logistics.

Research Centres

Lir National Ocean Test Facility is managed by University College Cork and is supported by MaREI and the UCC Sustainability Institute.

MaREI

MaREI is the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine research and innovation co-ordinated by the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at University College Cork. The Centre comprises over 220 researchers focusing on defined global challenges such as the Energy Transition, Climate Action and the Blue Economy.

UCC Sustainability Institute

The Sustainability Institute uses a global challenge-based approach to respond to, and find research solutions for, the three core environmental challenges of Climate Action, Circular Economy, and Healthy Environment.
