Partial fossil fragments of fossil fish have been found on the western end of the Iveragh Peninsula in Co. Kerry. These fish evolved during the Devonian period over 400 million years ago. This was a type of placoderm fish which had an armoured head. Bothriolepis grew to a length of 50 cm.
