Outline
Module Goal: To introduce students to professional education in the teaching of Civic, Social and Political Education with emphasis on active approaches to learning.
Module Content: Themes will include:
- Theories of Citizenship Education.
- CSPE's place in the Well Being Programme.
- Long, medium and short term planning guided by the CSPE Specification.
- Integrating and cultivating the key skills of Junior cycle.
- Exploring themes in citizenship.
- Pedagogical approaches such as discussion, questioning, simulation, media literacy and digital citizenship.
- Promoting attitudes and values in line with a human rights perspective.
- Innovative and action focused modes of assessment and preparing students for the classroom-based assessment.

- Discuss the key principles and concepts underlying the subject, CSPE, as it relates to secondary education in Ireland and critique issues relevant to citizenship education on a local, national and global basis.
- Critically evaluate the CSPE specification.
- Promote CSPE’s place in the Wellbeing Programme by highlighting the importance of linking students’ wellbeing to that of others.
- Develop and implement lessons and a course of study incorporating appropriate pedagogic strategies for the promotion of learning in CSPE, paying due attention to issues of diversity, differentiation, and the use of ICT and demonstrate a progression in learning over the course of these lessons.
- Plan lessons that develop skills in line with the Junior Cycle skills.
- Source and design appropriate materials to support their teaching.
- Interpret and critically reflect on pedagogic strategies for the promotion of active citizenship.
- Maintain a self-reflective and self-transformative stance on civic, social and political issues.
- Critically analyse the ethical impact on themselves of teaching the subject area civic, social and political education in schools.
Requirements
- Students must be in the process of registering with or seeking to meet the registration requirements of the Teaching Council of Ireland.
- Applicants must have a 2H2 degree (or equivalent) in a subject recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for post-primary level teaching.
