Outline

Module Goal: To introduce students to the study and application of core constructs from the Psychology and Sociology of Education.

Module Content:

  • Changing Societal Contexts
  • Constructing Adolescence/Young People
  • Educability: Perspectives, Practices and Structures which 'Fix' and 'Change' Ability
  • Well-being, Identity and Development: Contexts and Challenges.
  • Perspectives on Learning: Influences and Implications.
  • The 'Good' Teacher and Teaching? Intentions, Processes and Outcomes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
  • Schools as Agents of Social Stratification/Inequality Reproduction:
  • Structures of Class, Race-Ethnicity and Gender-Sexuality

Continuous assessment:  Total Marks 100

  • Written Examination 100 Marks - Semester 2 Written Exam - Summer
    • Paper 1: 1.5hr paper - Written Questions (100 Marks)

Requirements

  • Students must be in the process of registering with or seeking to meet the registration requirements of the Teaching Council of Ireland.
  • 2H2 degree (or equivalent) in a subject recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for post-primary teaching.
