Outline

Module Goal: To enhance critical understandings of Traveller exclusion in education and its intergenerational impacts on the Traveller community within the Irish school system. Students will develop a trauma informed recognition of the challenges that Traveller young people and their families have faced and continue to face in the education system and consider ways to interrogate and radically transform institutional policy and practice in the pursuit of social justice.

Students will engage in the complex debates around ideas of equality in education as well as the means to achieve it, within the framework of Traveller exclusion/inclusion.
This will include
  • Considerations of statistical evidence of Traveller inequalities;
  • The residual impact of decades of social policy and their role in reproducing or countering Traveller racism and inequality;
  • Theories for unpacking and challenging racism, and experiences of inequality from the perspectives of Traveller young people, families and schools.

The module is designed to recognise and respond to the need for a radical change within the education system in relation to the persistent ongoing everyday practices that shape Traveller exclusion. The module is intended to be personally transformative and will encourage a reflexive approach where the categorisation of education as a positive social, cultural and moral endeavour is undone. As such the module will have a substantial focus on critical thinking, unthinking and reconceptualising. The format of the module will be largely workshop-based with a blend of lecture delivery, discussion, and debate. This module will utilise a continuous assessment format where students will be tasked with a reflexive practice activity and a situated action research project.

Why Choose

2 Examine critically relevant research (and lack thereof) in the field and identify potential areas relevant to their current setting.
3 Examine Traveller inequalities with multiple theoretical lenses (including critical race theory and intersectionality) in order to develop a personal repertoire of anti-racist approaches to institutional practice.
4 Identify skills and practices that promote diversity, equality and inclusion, and scaffold agency and advocacy in higher education institutions;
5 Examine their professional context with a reflexive lens, in order to consider and evaluate critical forms of Traveller inequality.
6 Develop a trauma-informed approach to Traveller inclusion.
