draft Text:
The title of the proposed research cluster is EAGNA, a word which encapsulates the importance of learning in the Irish language, and one which reflects an indigenous embedded culture of knowledge with its roots going back to the dawn of history on the island. Those who will be involved in the work of this cluster are engaged in transdisciplinary research across multiple areas: from medieval Ireland — its history, culture and archaeology — through to the myriad compositions as Gaeilge in the early modern period with its rich manuscript tradition, to the literature and folklore of the modern era, cultural practices that are frequently rooted in earlier traditional learning. The central thread that links all these strands together is the Irish language, the 'seamless garment' of Ireland’s heritage or dúchas.
Misean EAGNA
In striving to achieve its goals, EAGNA will:
- Provide a centre of excellence for all those engaged in scholarship on any aspect of Irish language and culture or whose research is transmitted through the medium of Irish;
- Promote synergies between participating scholars in different units across the University;
- Encourage and support applications for funding that would enable group research on Irish-language culture, heritage and sources;
- Establish links with research groups in other Universities, nationally and internationally, which have similar research interests;
- Provide both an umbrella grouping and increased visibility for the many Irish-language research groups and events which are currently active across UCC.
