Welcome Statement
A warm welcome to our Staff Reflections section. We are delighted to officially launch this section as a space for disabled and/or neurodivergent staff members to ‘reflect’ upon their lived experience; and to allow allies to gain more insight into the day-to-day lives, thoughts and reflections of disabled/neurodivergent colleagues. Approximately 14% of UCC staff members report identifying as being disabled or neurodivergent (UCC EDI, 2022). Within the overarching aim of our Network, we therefore wanted to create a space of belonging and camaraderie, where like-minded colleagues can meet, reflect upon and discuss their personal experiences as a disabled/neurodivergent person.
However, more broadly, we also wanted to create a space for activism, advocacy and acceptance, both in UCC and the wider context. Disability is often viewed as a dirty word; connoted with shame. It is often difficult to disclose to colleagues, to managers and to others because of fear of retribution or of being judged. Staff members who do disclose often worry that their career will be impacted, while staff members who do not disclose often receive little to no accommodations. This, coupled with experiencing discrimination, can often mean that it is difficult to feel or experience acceptance or pride for our disabled activities.
The other aim of this section is thus to create a space for disabled and neurodivergent colleagues to feel accepted by like-minded colleagues and the wider UCC community; to advocate for better supports and understanding; and to celebrate disabled/neurodivergent identities, while also allowing space to reflect on grittier moments of disabled/neurodivergent living. Let this be your space; our space – for joy, celebration, acceptance and understanding.
