Mapping the policy & regulation landscape in Ireland on Climate Change

This report maps Ireland’s environmental policy and regulatory landscape, focusing on the governance and implementation of the Climate Action Plan and the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021. It examines the cultural, social, political and economic factors shaping climate policy, including Ireland’s EU membership, agricultural emissions, energy insecurity, fossil-fuel interests and the challenges of decarbonising an island energy system. The report identifies a strong emphasis on technical solutions, while highlighting the limited attention given to socio-cultural responses and public participation. It also considers how demographic characteristics, social values and Ireland’s political system influence public engagement with climate policy. More details Read publication

Citizens' level of trust in public institutions in Ireland in relation to climate change

This report examines Ireland’s contemporary climate policy landscape through the related concepts of trust and fairness within sociotechnical systems. It argues that policy success should be assessed not only by emissions reductions but also by public perceptions of fairness and trust in the institutions responsible for implementation. Fair policies can build trust, while trust can encourage public acceptance and compliance, strengthening the effectiveness of climate action. More details Read publication

Public perceptions and attitudes to mitigation and adaptation measures linked to Climate Change

This report examines how Irish citizens understand climate change, climate science, and climate action. It explores why broad acceptance of climate science does not always translate into support for climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. Building on earlier CLIMATUDE research into Ireland’s policy and regulatory landscape and public trust in institutions, the report demonstrates that climate action is shaped by social, cultural, economic, political, and affective factors. It focuses on the gap between accepting climate science and implementing effective and socially just climate responses. More details Read publication
