This paper explores the ways in which performance poetries – here using examples from both slam poetry and Instapoetry – offer a method for representing, refracting and constructing ideas of both the self and the body. Examining the ways in which perceived authenticity of the self and the excavation of same are vital components of both forms of performance poetry, I will connect with the ways that this impacts and is tied to bodily performances, too. Ultimately, this paper seeks to examine the ways embodied/bodily performances are used both as a tool within the poets’ repertoire and equally as a stand-in for constructions of the self, particularly in online performances.
