Use of GMOs in UCC

All use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in UCC shall comply with the requirements of the GMO (Contained Use) Regulations 2001, as amended. Prior to commencing work with GMOs, consent must be obtained from the EPA in advance. Applicants wishing to undertake GMO work should in the first instance contact the Biological Safety Advisor who will discuss the process with them. Submission of a risk assessment and its review and approval by the Genetic Engineering Group are necessary steps before the application is sent to the EPA. Further information on GMO compliance can be found under the headings on the left.

What is a genetically modified organism?

A “genetically modified (micro)organism” means an (micro)organism in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination, or by a combination of both.
