Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Cadaveric Hands-on Workshop
About this event
Oncoplastic breast surgery combines the principles of breast cancer surgery with plastic and reconstructive techniques to achieve safe oncological outcomes while preserving or restoring breast shape.
This one-day, hands-on cadaveric workshop at the ASSERT Simulation Centre is designed for surgical trainees wishing to develop their knowledge, technical skills and confidence in oncoplastic breast surgery.
The course focuses on selecting and planning appropriate surgical techniques based on tumour location, breast size, tumour-to-breast ratio and individual patient factors. Through a combination of focused teaching, faculty demonstrations and supervised cadaveric dissection, participants will gain practical experience in key aspects of breast cancer surgery and reconstruction.
Practical modules will cover a selection of techniques, potentially including image-guided wide local excision, axillary clearance, therapeutic mammoplasty, skin- or nipple-sparing mastectomy and implant-based breast reconstruction.
Working in pairs, participants will have the opportunity to practise operative marking, anatomical dissection, tissue excision, breast reshaping and reconstructive techniques. Experienced breast and plastic surgeons will provide direct supervision, technical guidance and individual feedback.
Particular emphasis will be placed on recognising important anatomical structures, avoiding common operative complications and understanding alternative surgical approaches when difficulties arise.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Plan: Select appropriate oncoplastic techniques based on tumour characteristics, breast anatomy and patient factors.
- Perform: Practise key operative steps in breast excision and selected oncoplastic and reconstructive procedures.
- Identify: Recognise important anatomical landmarks and structures to preserve during breast and axillary surgery.
- Reconstruct: Understand the principles of breast reshaping, therapeutic mammoplasty and implant-based reconstruction.
- Manage: Recognise common operative challenges, minimise complications and identify appropriate alternative or bail-out techniques.
